"Gertrude"

Whimsical public art…purposeful community engagement.

This interactive sculpture and water catchment system was commissioned to bring awareness to our consumer habits and the impact of those choices on our environment. It is made from 600 single use plastic water bottles and over 200 plastic straws collected by youth volunteers from local schools in one week. From her wings hang the plastic findings from a day long California Coast beach clean-up.

The sculpture was conceived of and created by Lara in collaboration with youth leaders from The Global Student Embassy and was an interactive attraction at the 2017 Earth Day Festival. The sculpture contains an operable rain catchment system and was ultimately displayed at the Lafayette Community Gardens and Learning Center.
